Peda

Peda

Peda or Pera or Milk Peda is a sweet from the Indian subcontinent, usually prepared in thick, semi-soft pieces. The main ingredients are khoa, sugar and traditional flavourings, including cardamom seeds, pistachio nuts and saffron (optional). The colour varies from a creamy white to a caramel colour.

You can also make it with milk powder instead of khoa and can use sweetened condensed milk instead of sugar. Can be made it in a microwave.

The word peda is also generically used to mean a sphere of any doughy substance, such as flour or khoa. Variant spellings and names for the dessert include pedha, penda (in Gujarati) and pera.

Pedas originated in the city of Mathura in present-day Uttar Pradesh. The Mathura Peda is the characteristic variety from the city. From Uttar Pradesh, the peda spread to many parts of the Indian subcontinent.

As with laddoos, pedas are sometimes used as prasadam in religious services. Peda is one of the traditional Indian sweets that is prepared during festive occasions or celebrations.

Peda is one of my all time favourite Indian sweets. I loved it so much but here we found it very rare in Sweets shop so I thought I should know how to make it, so that I can have when I want. Therefore I learned this from my mother. I love everything she cooks. We use to prepare Peda on Diwali (one of the popular festivals of India).

There are many types of pedas: Milk Peda, Mathura Peda, Kesar Peda (Saffron Peda), Dharwad Peda, Chocolate Peda, Malai Peda (Milk Cream Peda), Rose Peda etc.

It is an easy to make Indian sweets, taste super delicious and can be made in less than 15 minutes. I am sharing here the recipe to make Peda or Milk Peda in a microwave, using condensed milk.

It's simple to make and you can find all the ingredients easily in any grocery store. And you can enjoy this lovely desserts with your family, your loved ones.

  Recipe Servings: 10 - 12
  Cooking time: 10 Minutes

Ingredients

  • Sweetened Condensed Milk  - 200 grams
  • Milk Powder - 3/4 cup
  • Ghee/Butter - 1/2 tbsp
  • Nutmeg Powder (Jaiphal Powder) - a pinch
  • Green Cardamom Powder (Choti Elachi Powder/Hari Elachi Powder) - a pinch
  • Pistachios (chopped) - 4-5 (for garnishing)
  • Oil/Ghee (for greasing hands to make Pedas) - ads required

Preparation

  • To make Peda in a microwave, take a microwave safe bowl and add condensed milk, milk powder and ghee/butter into it. Mix all well.

  • Whisk nicely and make sure that no lumps left behind.

  • Mix in the nutmeg powder and green cardamom  powder (choti elachi powder/hari elachi powder) in the mixture and mix it again.

  • Place the bowl in the microwave and heat at high for one minute. Take out the bowl and stir again.

  • Heat it again for 30 seconds. The mixture should be of thick consistency now. If it is still thin in consistency then again heat for another 30 seconds.

  • Keep the bowl aside allowing the mixture to cool down a little.

  • The mixture is sticky so grease your hands with some oil or ghee to make pedas.

  • Prepare equal sized balls out of the mixture. Press them a little to give the exact shape of pedas. If you wish you can give it any shape e.g. an oval shape. I make sometimes round pedas and sometimes give them an oval shape.

  • Place some chopped pistachios in the centre of each peda. Pedas are ready to serve.

  • Align them on a plate and serve immediately or once cooled store them in an air tight container and place the container in the refrigerator.

  • Enjoy it with your loved ones.
